Details of Common Issues on Windows®

Issue 1: Nothing happens after the CD is put into the drive, cannot install
Description: Sometimes the installer file will not run automatically. Starting the installer manually from the CD is a common way to run files that otherwise do not automatically begin installation when you put the CD in your disk drive.
Resolution: Run the installer manually.

1.) Go to and open "Computer" (XP users open "My Computer")
2.) Right-click on the CD drive (often named for the software title you are attempting to install)
3.) Left-click on "Open" (Vista/XP users select "Explore") from the menu.
4.) The contents of the CD will appear. You should see the installer file located here, typically the file is titled "Setup" or "Setup.exe." If you do not see the Setup file, open the folder titled "fscommand." Open/run the Setup file to begin installation.

Issue 2: Error message: "This program requires at least 3MB of free virtual memory to run" (Version 2.0/1.12)
Description:

Some programs use an older version of Macromedia Director that malfunctions on systems with over 1 gigabyte of RAM, giving the error message: This program requires at least 3MB of free virtual memory to run. Changing with your virtual memory settings is not recommended, because adverse effects can occur with other programs. There is a simple work-around to bypass this component of the installation, and continue to install the program.
Resolution: Bypass the autorun program and run the installer manually.

Issue 3: Error: "16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem" (Version 2.0/1.12)
Description:

When attempting to install, an error message like above appears which states:
16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem
path to the installation file program
C:\Windows\System32\Autoexec.nt The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

This error occurs when the Windows system file Autoexec.nt becomes damaged. Microsoft does not state how this file becomes damaged, but notes the problem. More details
Resolution: Microsoft offers a solution with much complexity. We offer a much simpler solution with the same results.

1.)Open "My Computer" and open the local disk C: drive (or drive letter of the main hard drive where Windows is installed).
2.) Locate and open the "Windows" folder.
3.) Locate and open the "repair" folder. You should now be in this directory: C:\WINDOWS\repair.
4.) Right-click on "autoexec.nt" and left-click on "Copy" from the menu.
5.) Use the window's back button to go back into the "Windows" folder.
6.) Locate and open the "system32" folder. You should now be in this directory: C:\WINDOWS\system32.
7.) Go to the "Edit" menu at the top, left of the window. Select "Paste" from the menu.

Close the window and try to run the installer again.

Issue 4: Cannot install due to incompatibility with your 64-bit operating system
Description: Installation fails and you receive an error message stating that the software is incompatible with your 64-bit operating system and to contact the software vendor to see if an upgrade is available. This means that you have an older version of the software that is incompatible with the 64-bit edition of the Windows operating system.
Resolution: We do have upgraded versions of the Editor in Chief series software. For information regarding the upgrade please contact Technical Support at 800-458-4849 x205.

Issue 5: What is the TCTC AutoUpdater, and do I need it?
Description: Our newly released versions of software have a new AutoUpdater feature that is installed with the program. The TCTCUpdater will check for new updates periodically and will install any new updates, fixes or patches that are released for the software. It is a good way to ensure that the software is current and up to date. During installation you will be able to choose the frequency that the TCTCUpdater will check for new updates. We highly recommend that you utilize the update feature.
Resolution: During installation, you may be prompted to allow the TCTCUpdater. Choose to allow or add the updater as an exception within the firewall. Please contact Technical Support with any further questions.

Issue 6: Where do I find my Activation Key?
Description: Our newly released versions of software will need to be activated before you can launch the software. After installation, when you first attempt to launch the software, you will be prompted to activate the software. You can activate the software online or over the phone. You will need to provide the Activation Key that is provided with the software. The Activation Key can be found at the top of the insert included inside of the packaging.
Resolution: Online activation is highly recommended as phone activation is only available during business hours. Issue 8: The score is not correct at the end of an activity, or I cannot progress even though I should be able to; Game is not saving data
Description: 1. Once you logout of an activity and exit the game your scores are not saved when you log back into the game.
2. After completion of an activity your score shows 0 out of 0 correct and your overall score is 0% or a percentage less than what you expect to get and you cannot progress in the game.
Resolution: Check the "Local Storage" settings for Adobe Flash Player and set to unlimited. To do this, once you are logged into the game right click anywhere on the screen (be sure that the cursor is not on any of the buttons). A small menu will appear, click on the Settings tab at the bottom (folder icon), to view the Local Storage screen. Drag the marker on the line-grid all the way to the right so that it is set to Unlimited. Click the Close button.

Issue 9: The text/font in the program is not displaying correctly (Version 2.0/1.12)
Description: Sometimes, depending on your current system's display settings, the font may appear too small or too large for the screen/window. The Editor in Chief program does not allow you to manually enlarge the window frame or the text size from within the program. This problem is manageable by altering your operating system's display properties. Most of the time this can be adjusted to a way that can work for both your visual needs on your operating system and for Editor in Chief.
Resolution: 2 Options

1.) Editor in Chief requires a screen resolution of at least 800x600. We recommend the screen resolution to be set between 800x600 and 1024x768 for the best results. To adjust the screen resolution, right-click on the Desktop and left-click on "Properties" from the menu. Click the Settings tab. Drag the slider bar to select a screen resolution. Click the Apply button to view the changes temporarily and to see if it helps the font display in Editor in Chief. (You must quit and re-open Editor in Chief after changing screen resolutions to view the changes.) Click the OK button if you are satisfied with the results.

2.) Editor in Chief recommends a system DPI setting of Normal size, 96 DPI. To adjust the DPI setting, right-click on the Desktop and left-click on "Properties" from the menu. Click the Settings tab. Click the "Advanced" button. Select "Normal Size (96 DPI)" from the drop-down menu. Click the Apply button to view the changes temporarily and to see if it helps the font display in Editor in Chief. (You must quit and re-open Editor in Chief after changing dpi setting to view the changes.) Click the OK button if you are satisfied with the results.

If you feel that general text sizes are too small with 96 DPI, try increasing the system Font Size setting under the Appearance tab of the main Display Properties window. If you feel that the general appearance of all items on the system are too small (icons, font, graphics, etc.), try lowering the screen resolution, described above in no. 1.

Issue 10: How are statistics and user data saved and how do I view the report? (Version 2.0/1.12)
Description: This program allows you to choose to save statistical information and user progress to be viewed later. The program does not save this data automatically. The user must setup the program to record data and then must locate the file on the hard drive to view the report. How is this done and where is the file located?
Resolution: Select option "Record Data" in the program. To do this, open the Editor in Chief program and select to edit a document. Locate and select the File menu in the top left-hand corner. Select "Setup" from the menu. Check the "Record Data" checkbox and click the OK button. You will be prompted to enter a three-digit initial. After entering the initials, a data file is created on the computer with this name as its title. Each time the user with this name plays, the data will append to the same file name on the computer.

To view the data report, browse to and open the text file titled as the three-digit initial (Ex: ABC.txt). This file is always located in the original install directory. By default this directory is located here:
C:\Program Files\Editor in Chief*\Stats
*sometimes the program folder is titled by the acronym and includes the level: Ex: "EIC A2"

Issue 11: Cannot view the help manual on Windows 7/Vista (Version 2.0/1.12)
Description: Windows 7/Vista displays an error when the help manual opens in Editor in Chief software. Microsoft decided to develop Vista without the capability to read common Win32 help file programs. All other Windows operating systems previously supported Win32 help systems. When you attempt to open the Help in the game, an error message appears describing the incompatibility. More details
Resolution: Levels A1/A2 - Click Here
Levels B1/B2 - Click Here

Levels C1/C2 - Click Here

to view the help file online and to bookmark the help files for future reference, if needed (add to Favorites).

Issue 12: The Stats folder is hard to find and access (Version 2.0/1.12)
Description: Since the statistics are stored in the program install directory, it makes it inconvenient to always need to browse to and locate this folder just to view the report. There are methods offered by Windows to allow you to more easily access this folder and make it more convenient for viewing.
Resolution: Create a shortcut to the Stats folder on your Desktop. Browse to the Editor in Chief folder in the original install location. By default this directory is located here:
C:\Program Files
Open the Editor in Chief folder for the level you have installed and are working on. Sometimes the program folder is titled by the acronym and includes the level: Ex: "EIC A2." Locate and right-click on the "Stats" folder. Select "Send To..." and select "Desktop (create shortcut)" from the menu. You will notice a new file on the Desktop titled "Shortcut to Stats." You may rename this shortcut to a title more relevant, such as "Editor in Chief A2 Stats" or "EIC Stats" or any name of your choice.
