Description & Features

This is a one-year Algebra I course for Grades 7-9. Students who have a solid algebra background will have no trouble with the algebra problems from SAT and even the GRE.  This 368-page book highlights vocabulary and notation, and has examples from the history of math.

What makes this book unique and different from other algebra textbooks is that it is built from the experiences of an award-winning algebra teacher with more than 30 years of teaching experience. Many textbooks are written by a committee of authors, and many of those authors have little experience teaching beginning algebra students in middle school or high school.

Understanding Algebra I presents the most essential concepts and skills needed to fully understand and gain confidence in algebra in a step-by-step fashion, teaching students that algebra is generalized arithmetic. It helps students see the connection between mathematics that they already know and algebra, so that learning algebra becomes easier and less abstract. This book provides students with real strategies to succeed in solving word problems by using charts and translating strategies that guarantee success.

"On the very first page in this book you will find a poem - Arithmetic by Carl Sanburg. My son thought it was really cool to have a math book start with a poem and it seemed to relax him straight away. My son is quite intimidated with math however he seemed to take to this book straight away, and has never minded to work through it. He likes the way the book is written and the layout of the pages. The writing is black on a white page but any illustrations are done in color so they stand out well on the page. Each chapter starts with an explanation of the topic covered that the student reads. There is a nice amount of questions with each topic to ensure that the student has enough practice. My son really liked this book." - Lisa, MO
"One thing we noticed right off the bat were well-laid-out pages. There was color, charts, diagrams, and plenty of white space! One thing I personally think math textbooks get wrong too often is jamming too much information onto a page, and the student can start the lesson overwhelmed. That often happens with my oldest, so this was a bonus right away. Another thing that we liked was the opportunities to practice each concept at the end of the section. I actually felt like she had more practice problems related to the concept than her current math program. I think Understanding Algebra I is a great resource! If a parent doesn't understand Algebra, this would be a great book to put into the hands of the student who needs a better explanation of the subject (or if the parent just wants the student to learn independently!)." - Angie, TN
"I like the way Understanding Algebra I is set up. The explanations are easy to understand and the examples are easy to follow. It is written as if teaching one-on-one to the student. Since it is written to the student and the answers key is in the back of the book there is no teacher’s guide. I would definitely recommend Understanding Algebra I." - Jennifer, MO
" No teacher's manual is needed for this Algebra. The lessons are easy to follow, and all the answers are in the back of the book. The book is full color and over 300 pages long. There is a glossary in the back. But the biggest pro is that my daughter actually asked if we could keep using this book and not go back to her other Algebra book. That's pretty high praise right there! On my part, I appreciated that the text is easy to follow and that all the answers are in the back." - Amy, NC
"Algebra strikes terror into the hearts of many and it is one of those topics that people often do not learn well. In Understanding Algebra I Terri Husted, a recognized New York math teacher specializing in math anxiety, addresses these issues by presenting algebra clearly and systematically. In her book, as in real life, she tries to make algebra her students’ favorite subject. t begins with technical information about our number system and an arithmetic review, then clearly explains how to solve equations, and then moves on to word problems, inequalities, and polynomials. It tackles factoring, radicals, linear functions, systems of equations, and more with just the right amount of review and with clear explanations. Fairly often math history or real world topics are included, and those are a valuable addition to any math course." - Annie, ON, Canada
"The Critical Thinking Co. has a knack for covering material that has to be covered, but doing so in a way that doesn't feel like *work*, either to moms or to students. This book fit perfectly into that mold, and to be able to say that about a book with "Algebra" in the title is just flat-out amazing!" - Laura, TX
"This book does such a fine job of laying out the fundamentals of algebra in a way young students can understand that parents may find their children not only willing, but eager, to pore over its pages. Concepts are conveyed clearly and simply. Kids learn best by doing, and the playfulness and variety of the abundant practice problems make learning fun while paving a step by step path to a confident understanding of the material. The book starts with an excellent review of our number system - sets, operations, and properties - and quickly moves to evaluating expressions and solving problems. The book covers a significant amount of territory concisely and effectively and is a one year Algebra I course for upper middle school and high school. The author, Terri Husted, has been teaching math to middle school and high school students for over 30 years. That experience shows, in both her knack for engaging students and her ability to convey to them the knowledge they need for continued academic success." - Tillywig Brain Child Award Review,
"Since everything is explained to the student with step-by-step instructions for each lesson there is no teacher manual. Everything you need to teach Algebra 1 is in this book! My son and I both like the step-by-step lessons and love that it’s in color. Something about color makes for a more interesting math program. I think having color can make it more ‘fun’ than every page being black-and-white when students get to higher math. We also liked that he can write in the workbook and there is enough space to workout the problems. A few times he had to use notebook paper but for the most part there was enough room." - Linda, Homeschooling mother of six
"I used the Mathematical Reasoning® books for all four of my children starting at age three. These books are practical and easy to use. The children easily grasped object-to-number ratio, number recognition, addition, subtraction and even algebraic concepts at a very young age. I highly recommend Mathematical Reasoning®!" - Julianne, OK
"The lessons are long enough to make sure that the student grasps the material but not so long that they feel overwhelmed. Some math books are intimidating and you see that "deer in the headlights" look on your child's face. This book does not give that gloom and doom feeling. The lesson explanations are thorough and easy to understand. The quantity of problems in each lesson, are sufficient enough to grasp the concepts without over doing it. If you are searching for an Algebra I course, this is definitely worth checking out.
