Description & Features
Important Notes: The software is for Windows® operating system only and will not work on Mac OS X (however, an iPad version is available). See System Requirements for more details. Also, this software is for single-user only and does not save data for multiple users.
Word Roots teaches the meaning and spelling of roots, prefixes, and suffixes commonly used in English. Learning these word elements dramatically improves spelling and the ability to decode unfamiliar words. The activities focus on using these words in context to help students incorporate each word into their vocabulary and retain the correct spelling. There are periodic reviews to make sure students retain what is taught in the lessons. Word Roots books will add hundreds of words to your students' vocabulary and greater depth to their thinking and writing.
The Word Roots Flashcards™ can be used to supplement or enrich our Word Roots books/software products or as an independent teaching tool. The 10 flashcard games in this software teach students the meanings of 26 prefixes, 58 roots, and 41 suffixes as well as 136 vocabulary words. Learning the meaning of word parts helps students decode the meaning and spelling of new vocabulary by breaking a word into its parts. Each level includes all of the prefixes, roots, suffixes, and vocabulary words contained in the corresponding book or software as well as their meanings. This app give students the opportunity to hear how each word part and vocabulary word is pronounced. The flashcards include instructions for various quick, fun activities to help students learn the meanings and spellings of the word parts and the vocabulary produced from the word parts.
The 10 games are organized into what the author considers the optimal learning order, but can be played in any order. Games 1-6 are Study Games to learn the word parts and their definitions. Games 7-10 are Practice Games using the word parts to form words to show that students know the definitions of the word parts.
Word Roots Flashcard™ apps can be played independently and provide students the correct spelling and pronunciation of all word parts and vocabulary taught in the regular full version software.
