Description and Features

Bridges the gap between computation and mathematical reasoning for higher grades and top test scores.

Description and Features

Forget boring math lessons and dreaded drill sheets.  This fun, colorful 448-page book uses engaging lessons with easy-to-follow explanations, examples, and charts to make fifth grade mathematical concepts easy to understand.  It can be used as a textbook or a comprehensive workbook with your textbook to teach the math skills and concepts that students are expected to know in fifth grade—and several concepts normally taught in sixth grade.  This book emphasizes problem-solving and computation to build for success in higher-level math and math assessments.

Every lesson is followed with a variety of fun, colorful activities to ensure concept mastery.  The lessons and activities spiral slowly, allowing students to become comfortable with concepts, but also challenging them to continue building their problem-solving skills.  This book teaches more than mathematical concepts; it teaches mathematical reasoning, so students learn to devise different strategies to solve a wide variety of math problems.  It is written to the standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Last year I struggled with my daughter's math. She never complained about school work, except when it came time for math. We were using the same math program we have always used so I wanted to stick with it. It ended up discouraging her so I spent this past summer seeking out something that was high quality, yet a different approach to what I had been using. A friend showed me your Mathematical Reasoning™ books and I gave them a try. We are now halfway through this current school year and the difference is night and day. What was like 'pulling teeth' is now fun to her and she can concretely see and express how useful math is to her in her daily life.

As a teacher I like the problem solving activities as these could be used over again or with several students in the classroom.

Mathematical Reasoning presents math in a way that makes it not only simple to learn, but also practical to apply to everyday circumstance (obviously making math more meaningful to him).

It has been so good for her because it requires her to think! Sometimes she would get frustrated, but the material was engaging and it kept her motivated to try and figure it out.

I really like that there is a lot of life application, logic and critical thinking sprinkled throughout the book. Lessons do not appear overwhelming or take hours to complete. In fact, most pages take just a few minutes to complete. There is a lot of colorful visual appeal as well, without appearing too childish for these upper elementary kids.

We have truly enjoyed using this book. We started out by just using it once a week but my daughter begged for more! How can I turn down a child begging for Math!?! We are now using it daily and I can see the improvement in her math.

As a math instructor, I am so happy that it looks like I may have a math-brain in my family after all! He asks to do his math school work (Mathematical Reasoning book) every day!

I don’t know about you, but I really like the idea that my child might learn how to think critically while also doing her math or language arts!
