How many times have you been asked when your child will use math in the real world? One of Jahnnaā€™s favorite things to say is ā€œWhelp, I didnā€™t use any algebra today. See I donā€™t need to learn it.ā€ It might be true that the majority of people donā€™t walk around solving quadratic equations on a daily basis but we do use critical thinking skills without even realizing it. Dare to Compare uses simple, grade-appropriate math problems to teach students to go from single step math problems to two or more steps that occur often in daily life. Letā€™s look at one example that is something I was trying to figure out recently. Question 35 asks which trip takes less time? There is a train that travels 500 miles at an average speed of 90 mph and there is a car that travels 320 miles with an average speed of 60 mph. In a traditional math book, this would be two separate questions. In Dare to Compare they are asked to determine which one would take less time, requiring the knowledge of two questions combined into one. Dare to Compare is filled with similar types of problems. I love The Critical Thinking Co. I have found their prices, quality and depth of product to be some of the very best among curriculum providers.

  2. another home run for our family!
Dare to Compare Math has been another home run for our family! The problems at this level are multi-step, encouraging students to work their way through problems that they will be facing in common situations in their life. These include price comparisons and measuring skills. There is an explanation for each problem in the book. So if your student (or you) is struggling to understand on how to complete a problem, you have the information right in front of you to help your student get through. My son stuggles with super complicated algebra problems due to his learning disabilities. So the idea of using this math book with him to work through more common problems that he needs to tackle in real life was enticing to me. Having just a couple problems a day to tackle (about 15 minutes per day) was a good balance for him. The book definitely helped me to see areas where he needs to work and the cracks in his foundation math skills. The activities are definitely multi-step and require serious thinking. Your student will really need to dig into their critical thinking brain to solve them.

his collection of 150 problems asks students to perform calculations to make a comparison and come to a decision. While the calculation-based comparison format is consistent throughout, the wide-ranging problems incorporate a variety of math concepts including ratios, fractions, percentages, proportions, 2D and 3D geometry, graphing, algebraic reasoning, patterns, probability, statistics and more. The process of analyzing and solving these problems is not only an exploration of mathematical methods, it helps establish and reinforce an approach to critical thinking that is easily transferable and can prove extremely useful in day to day life. Which seemingly comparable pricing is the better deal? What is the fastest route to a given destination? More broadly, how can one apply reasoning and basic math to make optimal life decisions? This book helps students develop the tools and mindset with which to make such assessments with confidence and ease. Each problem is accompanied by one or more hints and a complete solution.
