If one of your educational goals for your children is to teach context clues or vocabulary, I would recommend Vocabulary Riddles from Critical Thinking Co. because the lessons are simple, but truly effective. Over the years, we have had the most success and long term understanding from short, but consistent lessons.

This highly entertaining book offers up a feast of fun, vocabulary-boosting riddles for readers to decipher. Each of the cleverly constructed riddles incorporates four vocabulary words, many of which appear on ACT and SAT vocabulary lists. Each riddle is followed by a series of questions through which the reader is led to analyze the vocabulary using definitions, synonyms, antonyms, and parts of speech. The final question asks students to evaluate several sentences in order to determine which one best decodes the riddle. To accomplish this, each sentence's four synonyms must be assessed as to their specific meaning as well as their compatibility with the corresponding vocabulary word within the context of the original statement. The book's activities have a puzzle-like quality that makes them pleasurable and engaging to do, qualities that motivate students to pore over the pages sleuthing, deducing, analyzing and, above all, learning!
