Pattern Explorer Beginning was well-received by both my children. They thought the pattern activities were fun and asked to do more. We averaged about one lesson per week and will continue till the end of the book throughout the summer. My second grader could complete the activities but required a little help occasionally to think through to the solution. My fourth grader found the activities fairly easy, but they still caused him to think and analyze, which is always great practice.

As a parent/teacher, I loved this product! The activities were right on point for bridging the gap between learning a concept to answer questions correctly and grasping skills that help you ask the right questions. Seeing patterns is something difficult to teach when it doesn't come naturally. This book gives specific aid to students struggling with getting there on their own. J gave it a 5 out of 10 because it was hard at first to figure out. After he figured out how to do each activity he enjoyed it and sped through. As his teacher, that means it did exactly what it needed to do - challenge his thinking and gradually increase his skill! Overall, I feel like this is an important resource to have that helps strengthen important skills in preparing for higher math. It is easy to use and great for multiple students. I highly recommend this product and feel it is worth the money!

We found it easy to complete at least two lessons a week, this provided a fun break from our normal math routine. One lesson would take us about 15-20 minutes to complete and this is just the right amount of time to keep my daughter's attention in math. This workbook is not a curriculum, it is a supplement and works well if you are looking to provide your child with some different learning activities.

Would I recommend this series of Pattern Explorer books? Yes. Without a doubt. Getting in math thinking and reasoning skills in ways that are not the same old problem/solution, equation/solution is a great thing. And these definitely fit the bill.

In a competitive world, such as this, it is imperative to foster critical thinking skills and creativity amongst students. And The Critical Thinking Co. is a great resource which offers supplemental workbooks, for example Pattern Explorer Beginning for third and fourth grade. Not only does this workbook develop a clearer understanding of problem solving, it also gives students the ability to transition from concrete to abstract thinking. My third grade student slightly struggles with critical thinking skills, as she does not slow down long enough to thoroughly interpret the directions. Understanding that an observation is needed before coming to a conclusion is crucial with such a workbook. Even though she was able to work through several lessons independently, I still had to give promptings or hints when looking over the work she had completed. It was quite enjoyable to observe my student employing her ā€˜deepā€™ thinking skills once a week. And overall she found this workbook to be exciting!
