Description and Features

Students hypothesize, investigate, record, analyze, and share through a hands-on study of snails.

Description and Features

This colorful, fun 80-page book is a very popular science unit. It teaches students how to obtain, evaluate, and communicate information through the hands-on study of snails and their environment.

Students describe what a snail looks like, name its parts, and identify three or more facts about snails, as well as compare and contrast unique characteristics of snails and humans. Students observe, communicate, classify, measure, infer, and predict as well as investigate, collect data, describe, and evaluate. These science process skills form the foundation for the scientific method. Students learn and develop skills in science, math, writing (creative and factual), art, and interaction with other students.

Science, reading, math, language, and/or art standards are applied in each activity and extension activities are included. Standards are referenced at the end of the unit. Each activity includes a Teacher Page and one or more Student Activity Forms. Teacher Pages include suggested time for the lesson, materials for that lesson, and guidelines. Some activities have separate versions for Grades K-2 and Grades 2-4.

Snailopolis, a hands-on study of snails and their environment, is an extraordinary educational tool. The book includes more than a dozen lessons in which students participate in science, reading, math, language, and art activities. Common Core Standards are applied throughout. From a teaching perspective, Snailopolis, with its highly organized, creativity-infused structure, is a gift. Its content engages to such a degree that moving through the carefully designed activities at times feels effortless. Yet, from an educational standpoint, there is a great deal going on - students observe, communicate, classify, measure, infer, and predict, as well as investigate, collect, describe, and evaluate data. Each activity includes a Teachers Page and one or more Student Activity Forms. Teacher Pages start with a suggested time for the lesson, followed by a list of materials needed and SAY - D0 guidelines. Snailopolis is designed to be age range adaptable, with some activities including separate versions for grades K-2 and grades 2-4
