Description & Features
Thinking Directionally promotes spatial perception and map-reading skills.
Exercises include:
- Spatial orientation | |
- Describing locations, directions, and paths involving simple city maps
- Describing area plots or objects spatially
- Interpreting maps |
The exercise content is primarily related to geography and mathematics content objectives. Learning disabled students needing spatial orientation assistance may find these exercises helpful.
Thinking Directionally A1 and B1 are designed for middle elementary grades, drawing on vocabulary and geography skills appropriate for those grades. Thinking Directionally C1 requires more complex discrimination of details and greater subtlety in directions and is more suitable for upper elementary grades. The activities are carefully non-graded for students of all ages and abilities.
While the Thinking Directionally books may be used as a sequential program in spatial thinking, the authors recommend linking exercises to the use of concrete manipulatives and geography content objectives. The Thinking Directionally books supplement similar exercises in the Building Thinking Skills® series.
