Mastering PSAT and Middle School Vocabulary

Description and Features

This 168-page book increases vocabulary, stimulates imagination, and boosts standards-based language arts skills. Each of the fifteen lessons teaches 180 PSAT (Preliminary SAT–a great primer for the SAT) vocabulary words, which are made up of dynamic, real-life words students may encounter while reading or use in their writing.

Each lesson contains definitions, pronunciation keys, parts of speech, and alternate choices for each word made up of synonyms, idioms, and/or phrases. Lessons also include a story involving middle school students that introduces language arts concepts such as alliteration, idioms, fallacies in reasoning, foreign words and phrases, mythology, and journalistic writing.

Students complete a variety of exercises requiring critical reading and writing skills to contextualize the words. The exercises deliberately use other forms of the words as different parts of speech, so that students learn to recognize these forms as variations of the original words— further expanding their vocabulary and enabling them to use the words in more contexts. The correct spelling of vocabulary words are emphasized with the jumble activity that asks students to unscramble the word before writing the correct spelling.

Whether used in the traditional classroom, as a homeschooling resource, or for independent study, Vocabulary Virtuoso is a highly effective and fun vocabulary resource!

Middle School Level - 180 Vocabulary Words and These Concepts:
alliteration, idioms, fallacies in reasoning, foreign words and phrases, mythology, journalistic writing

My high school son loves these work books. They are entertaining and he thoroughly enjoys doing vocabulary. I like the fact that the exercises and sentences use clues within the sentences to determine the answer. It is very helpful in teaching kids to look at the whole context.

Vocabulary Virtuoso is an invaluable tool for teaching vocabulary at home or in the classroom. Each of the fifteen lessons kicks off with a list of twelve words selected from PSAT vocabulary words. Pronunciation keys, definitions, synonyms and other alternate word choices are included. Each word list is followed by six skill-building exercises that provide a powerful vocabulary workout. Variety and repetition are skillfully employed to sustain the learner's interest and strengthen critical reading and writing skills. Each lesson includes an engaging story in which the student is to fill in spaces with the vocabulary word best suited to the context. Sentences and stories throughout the book portray life in a fictional middle school, a characteristic that makes them more relatable, and thus engaging, to the reader. Four of those six exercises require students to write words or unscramble letters to form the word, an approach that emphasizes and reinforces correct spelling.

Vocabulary Virtuoso is a welcome addition to the long list of language arts workbooks. Like its many companions, this workbook offers enriched lists of words. What sets it apart is its originality. Vocabulary Virtuoso is imaginative and innovative The stories are delightful and invite students to explore language through unexpected settings and events. A cast of characters knit the lessons together and induce the student to turn the page and move to the next lesson. In other words, learning takes place unexpectedly, and there is more to learn than just new words. I have been a teacher for 30 plus years, and this is one of the best tools out there. Enjoy. You, as a teacher (or parent) will have fun, too.
