Description & Features

This 192-page book increases vocabulary, stimulates imagination, and boosts standards-based language arts skills. Each of the lessons teaches PSAT and/or SAT vocabulary words, which are made up of dynamic, real-life words students may encounter while reading or use in their writing.

Each lesson contains definitions, pronunciation keys, parts of speech, and alternate choices for each word made up of synonyms, idioms, and/or phrases. There are several activities, including a story involving students in a classroom setting.

Students complete a variety of exercises requiring critical reading and writing skills to contextualize the words. The exercises deliberately use other forms of the words as different parts of speech, so that students learn to recognize these forms as variations of the original words— further expanding their vocabulary and enabling them to use the words in more contexts. The correct spelling of vocabulary words are emphasized with the jumble activity that asks students to unscramble the word before writing the correct spelling.

Whether used in the traditional classroom, as a homeschooling resource, or for independent study, Vocabulary Virtuoso is a highly effective and fun vocabulary resource!

"Katie has been working through this book entirely on her own. All I have had to do is correct her work each day. (The answer key is right in the back of the book, which makes it a breeze to correct). We added this to her regular school schedule, so she completed one section of a lesson per day, four days a week. I have noticed her making connections between the words she is learning and every day life. It's been fun to watch her light up and say "Hey! I know that word! I was just working on it the other day!" Since Katie has been the primary user, I decided to share her thoughts with you. "I like that this book has a lot of different pages for each word list so that you can really work on them and actually remember them. I liked the history stories a lot. I love working in workbooks, so I really liked that this was an actual workbook and not something we printed out and put in a binder. The thing I liked the most is that most other vocab books I've used always start you off with easy words, and this book gave me more challenging words right from the very beginning, so I was never bored with it. It has actually been fun to use and I'm learning a ton."" - April And Katie,
"The author did a great job with these lists of words found in this vocabulary book. Josh was challenged but not overwhelmed. He has been reading since he was three years old, so it is a bit difficult to find reading or spelling resources that are not boring for him. This book was a great fit! I asked Josh if he felt he was learning new words and definitions while working through the book and he said yes. He also said that he is improving on his writing skills. The more words you know, the better your writing will be he says. I couldn't agree more. If you have a son or daughter who are planning to take their PSAT or SAT tests, or who would like to brush up on their vocabulary skills, I would encourage you to check out this resource." - Betty Daley,
"The Critical Thinking Co. is a great company with many products worth looking at. Each one incorporates critical thinking, so they aren't your run-of-the-mill workbooks. A book like this is much easier for me because my son can work through it on his own without me looking over his shoulder. Each lesson begins with a list of vocabulary words that may be used on the PSAT and/or SAT exams. The list contains the word, pronunciation key, definition and a sample sentence using that word. Following the vocabulary list is six worksheets or exercises that require students to think critically and use words in different ways. For example, they will see synonyms for the word, fill in the blanks with the appropriate word, read a story that uses each word, etc. Another exercise requires them to unscramble the letters in the word, which will help them learn how to spell it correctly. They will also need to complete a sentence that shows they understand the definition of a word. I also like that it teaches students a little about ancient Greek history, ancient Greek drama, Shakespeare's London, Renaissance artists, etc. If you are looking for an easy-to-use workbook to help expand your student's vocabulary, look no further than Vocabulary Virtuoso." - Shelli Pabis, Winder, GA
"We are so thrilled that there is a new book in the Vocabulary Virtuoso series. We have used the first book for several years with middle school students, alternating it with Wordly Wise. Our students always want MORE Vocabulary Virtuoso, and now we can give them an advanced version in their 8th and 9th grade years. Thank you for creating such a powerful (and fun) language tool.
